A worthy tribute to one of the most beloved Orthodox saints of the 20th century, St. John Maximovitch the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco (1896-1966). Though a scholar and an intellectual, St. John chose to imitate Christ in humility, simplicity, spiritual discipline, and love. His child-like heart made him a favorite of children, including the many orphans he rescued, but often befuddled proud churchmen, who subjected him to cruel abuse. His totally incorrupt body now lies on view in the cathedral he built on Geary Street in San Francisco. The luminous text (originally in Russian)contains a brief survey of his life and the story of his glorification as a saint of the Orthodox Church (1994), followed by seven homilies about St. John preached on special occasions. St. John was the spiritual father of the author in his youth, and ordained him to the diaconate. He is now a highly respected senior priest in the Russian Church Abroad, and the author of numerous books (in Russian). Also included are testimonies written by grateful recipients of the saint's wonders, excerpts from the Synod document proclaiming his glorification (canonization), and his troparion (chief hymn). Perhaps the greatest treasure of this book is the photographs, most in full color. These are the very best photos of St. John available, including several of his incorrupt relics. They have been restored and artistically enhanced using the latest technology. There are also new photos from his glorification service, published for the first time, and photos of many people and places connected to St. John. The stunning visual beauty of this book is largely the work of photographer and graphic designer Yuri Fokin, and other professional photographers. None of the numerous other books about St. John holds a candle to this one for sheer visual impact and detail. The typography, paper, binding, and jacket are first-rate. Sure to please all who love St. John.
